Naomie Harris is getting back in the spy game — but this time she’s playing a Ms Perkins rather than Miss Moneypenny.
The actress, who took over the role of Moneypenny in the last 007 screen adventure, Skyfall, is in final negotiations to star opposite Ewan McGregor in the film version of John le Carre’s cracking novel Our Kind Of Traitor.
Director Susanna White has begun shooting non-acting scenes in a Finnish forest near the Arctic Circle, which is standing in for woodland near Moscow.
Our Kind Of Traitor concerns Perry Makepeace, an Oxford English Literature don, and Gail Perkins, his barrister wife (certain things in the movie are different from the novel, where she’s his girlfriend), who become drawn to another don — of the Russian Mafia kind — during a tennis match.
The Russian, Dima to his friends, is a big-time money launderer with knowledge of terrorist activities.
And Dima wants Perry and Gail to help him and his extended family defect to the UK.
The British intelligence services get involved and so do Dima’s many enemies. Soon, Perry and Gail don’t know who to trust.
A few months ago, Le Carre’s son Simon Cornwell — who is producing the film with his brother Stephen, long-time le Carre collaborator Gail Egan and Studio Canal — told me that the Gail role was being ‘built up in a more and more interesting way’ for the movie.
I bumped into Naomie at producer Charles Finch’s pre-Oscar dinner at Madeo in Beverly Hills, and she told me that post-Oscars, she was heading to a spa in England to get her body in shape. ‘I want to detox and get fit.’
She added, with an air of mystery, that there was a film role being discussed but revealed nothing else . . . Our Kind Of Traitor is that mystery movie.
Stellan Skarsgard has been cast as Dima the shady oligarch.
Homeland star Damian Lewis will play Hector, a British intelligence officer, while Mark Gatiss, a force in front of and behind the camera on the BBC’s Sherlock, will play his colleague Luke.
Hossein Amini has adapted le Carre’s novel, shifting round the tome’s locations.
In the book the main characters play tennis at a beach resort in Antigua, but for the picture this has been switched to Marrakech.

Other scenes will be filmed in London, Paris, and the French Alps.
Amini is red-hot at the moment thanks to his forthcoming gem of a film, The Two Faces Of January, which he has directed and written from a story by Patricia Highsmith.
That picture opens in the UK on May 16 and features Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen and Oscar Isaac, the latter giving a knock-out performance following on from his career-defining portrait of a folk singer in Inside Llewyn Davis.
Principal filming on Our Kind Of Traitor begins on March 26.
Then Naomie is due to join the next James Bond picture when director Sam Mendes gets cameras rolling in November.
