Idris Elba on the surreal moment he heard that Nelson Mandela had died 'I looked back at Kate and Prince William and they were just in tears with me'

'I looked back at Kate and Prince William and they were just in tears with me': Idris Elba on the surreal moment he heard that Nelson Mandela had died

Actor Idris Elba has described the 'surreal' moment when he heard Nelson Mandela had died, during the world premiere of his biopic about the statesman, in which he plays the title role.
He said the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were in tears when news of the former South African president's death emerged midway through the screening of the film Mandela - Long Walk to Freedom, a fortnight ago.
In an interview with Radio 2's Chris Evans, he said it was 'undoubtedly one of the strangest - and most beautiful - moments of my career'.

Elba explained: 'Literally halfway through the film Mandela had passed and there was sort of a slight buzz around the auditorium.
'Interestingly, the Duchess, Kate, sort of turned to me and looked at me as she had her phone and I wondered what was wrong with her because she looked quite emotional, but the film's very emotional.
'And my girlfriend looked at me and handed the phone and I looked down and Mandela had passed and it was on a website.

'It was just the most surreal moment. I looked back at Kate and Prince William and they were just in tears with me. It was just odd. very odd.
'There's a moment in the film and I play older Mandela and he says this one line and it is 'just open the gate and let me free' - and I kid you not, that that was that line when we heard the news that was on the screen.'
He and the film's producers decided he should make an announcement to guests who had gathered within the Odeon Leicester Square cinema in London.

'It only felt appropriate to say what had happened and honestly there was an audible gasp in the auditorium.
'Some people didn't know, they had their phones off. It was just surreal.
'It was very odd, after seeing the credits and I walk on stage. They were giving me a nice round of applause but it was just this moment where I had to say please sit down, and announcing the official speech from president Zuma of South Africa. It was just weird.'

Kate Middleton, Duchess Of Cambridge And Prince William To Attend Mandela Royal UK Premiere

BY REBECCA MERRIMAN ON NOVEMBER 14, 2013

Kate Middleton, Duchess Of Cambridge And Prince William To Attend Mandela Royal UK Premiere

The Royals will make an appearance at the Idris Elba starring movie

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William are set to join Idris Elba and Naomie Harris on the red carpet for the Royal and UK premiere of Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom next month in London, it has been confirmed.
According to The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund and Pathé the royal couple will join the stars of the movie at the Odeon Leicester Square on Thursday 5th December for the star studded premiere of the film, based on the life of the legendary South African leader. On the night, the Duke and Duchess will not only meet stars from the movie but also director Justin Chadwick and Nelson Mandela's daughter Zindzi Mandelea.

It's not the first time the couple will walk a red carpet for a royal premiere. Last January Kate and Wills headed down to Lecister Square for the premiere of Steven Spielberg's War Horse.
That time the Duchess was so touched by the adaptation of the popular stage show, that she reportedly cried during the screening.
The acclaimed director told BBC Breakfast News following the premiere: "I was sitting next to her and all I know is at one point my wife, who was sitting to my right, right in front of my face she passed a Kleenex,"
Will Kate get teary-eyed in Mandela: A Long Walk To Freedom as well? (WENN)
"I saw the Kleenex go across my face, arrive and stop but I didn't want to intrude on her experience watching War Horse so I never glanced over,"
"According to my peripheral vision her eyes were dabbed," he added.

Idris Elba stars as Mandela in the movie with Naomie Harris as his wife Winnie, and to the star's relief it has been well received by the Mandela family. The Luther star previously admitted though he was particularly nervous during the world premiere in South Africa last month due to the sensitivity of the film's content.
“In South Africa, they were very silent and I wondered what that was about,” he told Variety magazine, “I thought maybe they didn’t like it, but they were just absorbing. You’ve got to remember, the whole freedom struggle in South Africa is about 25 years old. When we got there, the reaction was real.”

Elba also told reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival that playing Mandela was a "massive challenge".
He revealed, “It was important we had both sides, the good and the bad.
"I didn't want to deface Mr Mandela in any way, but I didn't want to portray him in a way that wasn't honest... the challenges were massive, but we embraced them.
"He had a very difficult life, so we weren't expected to make an easy film."
Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom will hit UK cinemas on January 3, 2014.

Naomie adds a floral touch to Royal polo match with Prince William -CelebrityRedCarpet.co.uk

NAOMIE HARRIS ADDS A FLORAL TOUCH

TO ROYAL POLO MATCH WITH PRINCE WILLIAM

by Kathy Saunders - Thursday May 30, 2013
Actress Naomie Harris added a girly touch to the Audi Royal Polo Challenge 2013 with Prince William at Chester Racecourse on 29 May 2013 in Chester, England.
ACTRESS NAOMIE HARRIS ADDED A GIRLY TOUCH TO THE AUDI ROYAL POLO CHALLENGE 2013 WITH PRINCE WILLIAM AT CHESTER RACECOURSE ON 29 MAY 2013 IN CHESTER, ENGLAND.

Bond girl and all round great actress Naomie Harris is not only one very talented lady,
she's also rather stylish to boot. After not one but two gorgeous red carpet looks at the
Cannes Film Festival 2013, she has now brought her particluarly pretty brand of s
pring style to Audi's Royal Polo Challenge with Prince William.
Naomie might not technically be a royal herself but after this very chic and very pretty appearance,
we would certainly be all for crowning her "Style Queen Naomie". A lame title, perhaps, but easy to
agree with, no?
Our continued admiration of Naomie's style has a lot to do with the way she was rocking a
gorgeous floral dress with some bright pastel yellow shoes! Not only was it a great look
in general, it was a great look for Naomie and it certainly helped to brighten up a rather
dreary day in the middle of a field!
Well, we say field, but when there's a polo club house the size of a small country filled
with A-listers, aristocracy and crates of champagne it becomes clear that they weren't exactly
"down on the farm"...

A pretty beauty look to match

To go with her feminine outfit, Naomie opted for a rather simple beauty look. She kept her
sleek hair loose and paired with with make-up that was just glamorous enough for a polo party
with a prince without looking over the top.
We're talking subtle eyeliner, a coat of black mascara, a hint of blush and a little lipgloss to finish.
As far as "easy beauty looks" go, we think this one is among the easiest! So, why not steal it this
spring?
Simplicity is so IN right now.
There you have it. If you were ever in need of some style inspiration for the next time you find
yourself in a field with theheir to the British throne...
