Naomie Harris, star of boxing movie Southpaw, doesn’t actually like boxing

Naomie Harris, who appears in Jake Gyllenhaal’s boxing movie Southpaw, isn’t actually a fan of boxing.
Despite boxing being the focus of Southpaw, Harris has admitted to Net-A-Porter.com’s The EDIT that the sport reminds her of death.
Harris plays social worker Angela Rivera in the Antoine Fuqua-directed film, which tells the story of light-heavyweight boxing champion Billy Hope.
When asked if she’d ever go to a match, she said: ‘I’d never do that. You smell death in the air. That’s my worst possible nightmare.’
But the ‘passion and persuasion’ of director Fuqua convinced her to get on board.

‘Antoine called me. He was so passionate, so persuasive, that by the end of the call, I was like, “I’m getting on the plane to Pittsburgh and working with this man.”
‘I’m so glad I did. He pushes you really hard, but he shows he has faith you can do it. He makes actors feel valued and important, and creates an environment that is totally safe.
‘All those things mean you can and want to take risks. I had the best time.’Naomie is currently shooting the new James Bond film, Spectre, which is out November 6.

Antoine Fuqua's 'Southpaw' Gets a New Trailer (Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, Naomie Harris)

Antoine Fuqua's 'Southpaw' Gets a New Trailer (Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, Naomie Harris)

Southpaw opens on July 24th.
Southpaw opens on July 24th.
The other boxing drama directed by a black filmmaker (Ryan Coogler's "Creed" as well), scheduled to be released later this year, is Antoine Fuqua's "Southpaw," which stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a boxer who fights his way to the top, only to find his life falling apart around him.
Billy “The Great” Hope (Gyllenhaal) is the reigning Junior Middleweight Champion whose unorthodox stance, the so-called “Southpaw,” consists of an ineloquent, though brutal display of offensive fighting… one fueled by his own feelings of inadequacy and a desperate need for love, money and fame. With a beautiful family, home and financial security, Billy is on top both in and out of the ring, until a tragic accident leaves his wife dead and sends him into a downward spiral. His days now an endless haze of alcohol and prescription drugs, his daughter taken by Child Services and his home repossessed by the bank, Billy’s fate is all but sealed until a washed up former boxer named Tick (played by Forest Whitaker) agrees to take the bereaved pugilist under his wing so long as he agrees to his strict ethos. Tick rebuilds Billy into a new man: one that is agile, fearsome and uncompromising in the ring while thoughtful, loving and disciplined outside of it. Now, as he works to regain custody of his daughter and mounts a professional comeback, Billy must face his demons head-on.
Fuqua has never been nominated for an Academy Award - not even for "Training Day" which saw its star, Denzel Washington, win the Oscar for Best Actor, and co-star Ethan Hawke nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Could this be Fuqua's first? Time will tell.
Its July release date may suggest that the releasing studio might not be positioning it for Oscar contention. Although it's a Weinstein Company film, so anything's possible. And Hollywood loves its white fighter movies. Also, the film is sure to get the right kind of attention, if only because of its strong cast, which also includes Naomie Harris playing a social worker assigned to Gyllenhaal's family.
Oh, and 50 Cent has a role in it as well.
"Southpaw" opens on July 24th.

Naomie Harris Set For Southpaw - Empire magazine

Naomie Harris Set For Southpaw
She'll star with Jake Gyllenhaal

Boxing drama Southpaw has seen more than a few changes both in front of and behind the camera, but director Anton Fuqua has finally solidified the cast list, and Naomie Harris has now jumped aboard.
Originally developed as an unofficial follow-up to 8 Mile with Eminem playing a boxer, Southpaw has since evolved into a standalone film, with Jake Gyllenhaal as Billy "The Great" Hope, a left-handed pugilist who wins a big title but suffers a tragedy shortly after. With his life in tatters he must piece everything back together to regain the respect of his young daughter. Sons Of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter wrote the original script, though Fuqua has reportedly since brought on Equalizer collaborator Richard Wenk to polish it.
Though Lupita Nyong’o had been in courted to play one of the main roles, Harris will instead step in as Angela, the social worker who aids Gyllenhaal and his offspring. Rachel McAdams made a deal to play Billy’s wife Maureen, while Forest Whitaker is set as Titus “Tick” Willis, who retired from the ring after losing an eye and trains younger fighters. Fuqua is busy cranking the cameras now for a 2015 release.
Harris, last seen in Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, has most recently worked on John Le CarrĂ© adaptation Our Kind Of Traitor and will be back in the spy world once more when she returns as Eve Moneypenny to the Bond franchise for the 24th instalment.
