They shared the screen as Nelson and Winnie Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, and now Idris Elba and Naomie Harris are planning to bring their chemistry to a new film, novel adaptation The Personal History Of Rachel Dupree.

Claire McCarthy wrote and will direct the indie drama, which draws from Ann Weisgarber's book. Harris will be the title character, pregnant with her latest child even as she worries about the five she already has with her untrustworthy husband, played by Elba. Worried about how her family will survive the incoming cold winter, she's forced to take matters into her own hands, preparing to fight for her survival and that of her children. Her husband, meanwhile, seems set on her staying put and focusing on his ambitions.

Sounds like it will be an intense, dramatic face-off between the pair, and the rights will be on sale at Cannes. Elba will next be seen in Star Trek Beyond (out July 22) and heard in Finding Dory (29 July). Harris hasOur Kind Of Traitor due this week.

First it was October 23. Then it was November 6. But now Spectre, the 24th official James Bond adventure, has finally settled on a UK release date. It'll receive its world premiere in London on October 26, and open the same night in the rest of the country. "For the first time ever, the film will open on the same night at cinemas across the UK and Ireland," said distributor Sony Pictures in a press release. Unusually that means Spectre will be out on a Monday, which will make the figures for its opening "weekend" interesting. But with Skyfall raking in well north of a billion dollars worldwide, that should prove an insignificant issue. Elsewhere in Spectre news, director Sam Mendes has confirmed/insisted to - of all places - the BBC's Test Match Special that this Bond will certainly be his last. He said that after Skyfall, of course, but was persuaded to return after the producers twisted his arm. This time, however, he seems to determined to move on. "I said no to [this] one and then ended up doing it," he told the cricketers, "but... I don't think I could go down that road again. This was an enormous undertaking, and a bigger movie than Skyfall; it's shot in more places. You do have to put everything else on hold. It's more a lifestyle choice than a job." But it's also, he clarifies, "a fantastic life-changing thing". Finally, Mendes has teased that Spectre's theme song is finished, but declined to reveal who's recorded it. We should get clarification of that sooner rather than later. "You won't have to wait long..." C'mon, it's obviously Motörhead. With Mendes back directing a script that has been written by John Logan, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, Spectre sees Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris, as M, Q and Moneypenny respectively, with new recruits Christoph Waltz as Oberhauser, Dave Bautista as Mr. Hinx, Bellucci as Lucia Sciarra, Lea Seydoux as Madeleine Swann, Stephanie Sigman as Estrella and Andrew Scott as Denbigh. Oh, and Daniel Craig as James Bond, obvs. As we said, it’ll hit British and Irish screens on October 26 before heading to the States and elsewhere a whole eleven days later.

Originally developed as an unofficial follow-up to 8 Mile with Eminem playing a boxer, Southpaw has since evolved into a standalone film, with Jake Gyllenhaal as Billy "The Great" Hope, a left-handed pugilist who wins a big title but suffers a tragedy shortly after. With his life in tatters he must piece everything back together to regain the respect of his young daughter. Sons Of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter wrote the original script, though Fuqua has reportedly since brought on Equalizer collaborator Richard Wenk to polish it. Though Lupita Nyong’o had been in courted to play one of the main roles, Harris will instead step in as Angela, the social worker who aids Gyllenhaal and his offspring. Rachel McAdams made a deal to play Billy’s wife Maureen, while Forest Whitaker is set as Titus “Tick” Willis, who retired from the ring after losing an eye and trains younger fighters. Fuqua is busy cranking the cameras now for a 2015 release. Harris, last seen in Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, has most recently worked on John Le Carré adaptation Our Kind Of Traitor and will be back in the spy world once more when she returns as Eve Moneypenny to the Bond franchise for the 24th instalment.

Bond may be back, but Empire can exclusively reveal that Sam Mendes won't be joining him. At the BAFTAs recently, basking in the glow of Skyfall's triumph for Outstanding British Film, it seemed that Mendes, who had previously claimed he would make just the single Bond entry, could be tempted back for another go. But, having bumped into the Oscar-winning director on a barren Scottish glen - or was it a glitzy Macau casino? - he confided in us that he won't be returning to direct Bond 24. “It has been a very difficult decision not to accept Michael and Barbara’s very generous offer to direct the next Bond movie," explained Mendes. "Directing Skyfall was one of the best experiences of my professional life, but I have theatre and other commitments, including productions of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and King Lear, that need my complete focus over the next year and beyond." With Skyfall freshly crossing the $1.1bn mark at the box office and still hoovering up plaudits - it dominates the nominations at this year's Jameson Empire Awards - the news will no doubt be a blow to producers Broccoli and Wilson. Then again, with a freshly reinvigorated franchise to oversee and actors of the calibre of Daniel Craig, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw and Ralph Fiennes to work with, there'll be no shortage of high-calibre applicants to pick from for Bond 24. If his gifted direction of dramatic beats came as no surprise to movie-watchers, Mendes' adroit handling of Bond's action sequences wowed fans and elevated Skyfall to critical and commercial echelons previously never enjoyed by a Bond movie. For his part, the 47 year old director refuses to rule out the possibility of a Martin Campbell-like return to the franchise in years to come. "I feel very honoured to have been part of the Bond family", said Mendes, "and very much hope I have a chance to work with them again sometime in the future". A response from Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli has just reached us, and it more than leaves the door open to a Mendes return. "We thoroughly enjoyed working with Sam, he directed our most successful Bond movie ever, Skyfall. We would have loved to have made the next film with him but completely respect his decision to focus on other projects and hope to have the opportunity to collaborate with him again."
