Front Row Chat: Naomie Harris on Idris Elba and James Bond ~ Elle

Front Row Chat: Naomie Harris on

Idris Elba and James Bond

She’s Miss Moneypenny to Daniel Craig’s Bond, Winnie to Idris Elba’s Mandela, and (ahem) one of Elle’s Women in Hollywood cover stars from November. At the moment, though, actress Naomie Harris is just happy to be taking a much-needed break after doing the awards circuit for her critically acclaimed work in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. And since she’s more into staycations than jet-setting, the native North Londoner was happy to make time for a trip to Burberry Prorsum’s Fall 2014 runway show.
We caught up with the bubbly beauty in the front row just before it all kicked off (a.k.a. when Harry Styles and Bradley Cooper entered the building).

Congrats on your big shoot for Vanity Fair’s Hollywood Issue. Be honest: Were you miffed that Julia Roberts got to sit on Idris’ lap?

[Laughs] I’m like, I’ve done that, it’s alright. You can have him, Julia.

What’s something about Idris Elba that would surprise us?

I was surprised to learn that he only needs four hours of sleep at night. That’s the reason why he can work during the day, DJ at night, do a documentary... it’s insane. He can do anything.

What was it like to hear of Nelson Mandela’s death while you were promoting the film?

We heard the news at the London premiere. It was really devastating. We knew he was ill, but we didn’t realize that he was going to die. Last we had heard, his condition was stable and he was in good spirits.

You were at Burberry last season. What’s brought you back?

Christopher. He’s such an amazing designer, but he’s also been a huge supporter of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. He supported our whole campaign, and also lent me some wonderful dresses to wear on the tour. Now I want to support him.

And of course, you’ve got the ultimate film role to your name: Bond girl. Any news on another film?

I’m Moneypenny, so hopefully I will be returning, and they’re saying that I’m returning.

Moneypenny is actually the best type of Bond girl, because she sticks around and doesn’t get dumped.

Yes, it’s fantastic. She doesn’t kiss Bond and then die. It’s wicked.
